“… by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impoible for God to lie, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge would have strong encouragement and indwelling strength to hold tightly to the hope set before us. This hope [this confident aurance] we have as an anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whatever preure bears upon it]—a safe and steadfast hope that enters within the veil [of the heavenly temple, that most Holy Place in which the very presence of God dwells], where Jesus has entered [in advance] as a forerunner for us, having become a High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:18-20 Amplified Bible)

In our culture today, the word “hope” refers to “a chance that something good will happen” or “something that you wish for.” [Macmillan Dictionary] It’s not uncommon to hear someone say something like, “I hope we have good weather for our family reunion” or “we’re hoping for a good harvest this year.” It exprees our wishes and desires with the sense that they may be fulfilled or they may not.

But “hope” in the Bible means so much more. It is the unshakeable confidence that God will do exactly what He said He will do in His Word – in His timing and in His way.

However earnest and good-intentioned that people may be, they can’t always fulfill their promises. But it is impoible for God to lie and He alone has the power to bring everything He says into being in accordance with His plans as a loving Father to those who have put their faith in Him through Jesus Christ, His Son.

There are times when we feel disappointed by God or confused by Him because He doesn’t always do things as we expect or do them in our time frame. In those moments, we have a choice. We can give in to discouragement and feelings of hopelene or we can hold tightly to the hope that is set before us. This hope is not just for today or tomorrow, but it is for eternity.

No matter how difficult your situation may be, you can always turn to the Lord and begin to hold tightly to the hope He sets before us, confident that “it cannot slip or break down under whatever preure bears upon it.” He will bring us safely through this challenging world and into the place the place in heaven where Jesus, our high priest forever, is waiting to welcome us.
